Flod 57 – a new river flows through Malmö

This year, the initiative Flod 57 proposed in collaboration with performance artist Stefan Andersson, has received funding from the European project The Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, a project running in 7 European cities that explore our relations with the sea.
In Malmö, this initiative is run by Malmö University, Marint Kunskapscenter and Social Innovation Sweden.
Our proposal is about connecting parts of the city that are not close to the sea. Malmö is a coastal city, but as it happens in many other cities, the neighbourhoods next to the beach are also the wealthiest areas of the city. Only a few people can have an everyday connection with the sea and routines that include a direct relation with it.
Stefan and Yénika will be exploring how tools of design and performing/theatre disciplines contribute to invite people closer to the sea. For this, we imagine the bus lines 5 & 7, connecting eastern Malmö to the sea, as an imaginary river that flows across the city, carrying also our own stories to the sea, both our connections with Öresund as the sea we have here, and all the seas in the world that we have connections with, from our countries of origin. We hope to share these stories with each other as well as exploring the sea in different ways.
For this, we have also started a collaboration with the library of Rosengård, a perfect place to gather and start our journey to the sea together.
We will host 3 outings to the sea, from which two are public and one is done with a local organisation.
The project will be running through June 2024, and will later on be shared with the public in an exhibition format, during Malmö Gallery weekend in September 2024.
Follow the news of our journey, and welcome to explore the sea with us!
